What it is

Your federal criminal record, apostilled for use abroad.

The FBI Identity History Summary —known as the FBI background check— is the federal criminal history record of the United States. The FBI issues it from your fingerprints.

For a foreign authority to accept it, it must carry the Hague Convention apostille, which for federal documents is issued only by the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C. If the destination country is not a party to the Convention, consular legalization applies.

Anatomy of a fingerprint: core, delta, ridges readable edge to edge, and a smudge or double print that fails the review; FD-258 card
What we check in every print before filing: core, delta and readable ridges

Two profiles, two routes, the same document

U.S. citizens and permanent residents

LiveScan, electronic submission

LiveScan fingerprints at our office, submitted electronically: the report is usually ready in 1–2 business days. We ask for your valid ID and, if the apostille is for a specific country, which one.

Non-citizens

FD-258 card in person

Your prints are rolled on an FD-258 card at our office and the request goes to the FBI by mail: it takes longer than LiveScan, but the document is the same. We ask for your valid passport and your status in the United States.

What it is used for: visas and residence abroad · naturalization and immigration processes · international adoptions · recognition of degrees and licenses · employment abroad.

Frequently asked questions

What people ask us before booking.

Short answers. If your case is specific, write to us: we reply in writing within one business day.

For U.S. citizens and permanent residents, and for foreign nationals who need their FBI report while in Florida: visas, naturalization, international adoptions, recognition of degrees or immigration processes in another country.

Fingerprinting at our Miami office —LiveScan for citizens and residents; FD-258 card for non-citizens—, the review of every print, filing with the FBI, the federal apostille if you order it, and digital delivery of the document.

FBI report only: 1–2 business days for citizens and residents; 12–15 business days for non-citizens. With express apostille: 12–15 business days for citizens and residents; 6–7 weeks for non-citizens. With regular apostille: 4–5 weeks for citizens and residents; 8–10 weeks for non-citizens. Timelines start once we have your complete documents.

It is the certification that lets you present the FBI report to the authorities of countries that are party to the 1961 Hague Convention. If your destination is not a party to the Convention, consular legalization applies. We confirm which one you need.

Federal. FBI documents are apostilled only by the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C., never by the Florida Secretary of State or any other state.

Standard delivery is digital, as an apostilled PDF. Sending the original by international courier is quoted separately depending on the destination country.

Because digital capture shows the quality of each print as it is taken, and the one that does not read is retaken on the spot: the report arrives sooner and with less risk of rejection. If the FBI still rejects the prints, the new capture is free with the rejection letter.

The request has to be filed again with new prints. With LiveScan, the new capture is free with the FBI’s rejection letter; with an FD-258 card, the resubmission fee is 50% of the no-apostille package, or 78 USD with apostille.
